The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed James van Riemsdyk.
Shortly after, David Pagnotta confirmed it’s a one-year deal worth $900K. This move helps the Blue Jackets get closer to the salary cap floor. They needed more forwards after losing Patrik Laine and Johnny Gaudreau recently.
Justin Danforth’s wrist injury means he won’t start the season, leaving Columbus with just 10 healthy forwards. General Manager Don Waddell is focused on building a complete lineup without facing penalties for being under the salary cap floor.
JVR isn’t as strong offensively as he was with the Flyers or Maple Leafs but can still help Columbus’ middle-six forwards. Last year with Boston, he scored 11 goals and had 38 points in 71 games, including his 1,000th NHL game. Most of his points came early in the season: seven goals and 29 points in the first half . Fans might think this signing is a smart move for depth.
Leadership and Experience:
JVR could score around 30-35 points this year but his leadership is key. He reached the Stanley Cup Final as a rookie with Philadelphia in 2009-10 and has over 300 NHL goals. His experience will be valuable for younger players on the team.
He might also become an attractive trade option for teams needing scoring depth later this season. With his affordable $900K salary, contenders could easily pick him up if they need to boost their bottom six forwards.
Do you think JVR will make a big impact?
