The Montreal Canadiens have locked in goaltender Sam Montembeault with a three-year extension. This new contract comes with an average annual salary of $3.15M.

For much of the season, Montembeault has been in extension discussions. Montreal’s management has been juggling the idea of either re-signing or trading the 27-year-old.

Trade rumors have been swirling around the Montreal crease. The team currently has three goaltenders on deck: Montembeault, Cayden Primeau, and Jake Allen. And guess what? They haven’t even picked a starter from this trio.

Montembeault has played 10 games this season, Allen has been in nine, and Primeau has played in five. Montembeault has shown he’s got the goods. He’s been the most effective of the three options this early in the season.

He’s recorded a 5-3 record and a .910 save percentage in his 10 games. This continues his upward trend with the Canadiens. He set a .891 save percentage in 2021-22 and a .901 save percentage last year.

Montembeault was snagged off waivers from the Florida Panthers before the 2021-22 season. The Canadiens signed him to a two-year, $2M contract before the 2022-23 season. Throughout his five-year NHL career, Montembeault has played 113 games, with a 38-48-13 record and .897 save percentage.

With Montembeault’s extension, all three of Montreal’s goaltenders are signed through next season. This gives the team some stability in the net. Now they can shift their attention to their six pending free agents.

Among these are Sean Monahan and Tanner Pearson, the only pending-UFAs on the roster. The team is projected to have $2.42M in cap space at the trade deadline, and $8.1M next summer.
