‣ Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin is sidelined day-to-day and will not play in the upcoming game against the New York Rangers.
‣ Defenseman Justin Holl is questionable for the game against the Rangers, while Jake Walman is expected to return to the lineup after missing several games due to illness and injury.
‣ Larkin, who has been with the Red Wings for his entire eight-season career, is in the first year of an eight-year, $69.6M contract extension. He was named captain for the 2020-21 season after Henrik Zetterberg had to stop playing due to a degenerative back condition.

Derek Lalonde, the head coach of Detroit Red Wings, has some news. Captain Dylan Larkin is out for the count, at least for a few days. He won’t be playing against the New York Rangers on Wednesday. No more details were given.

Larkin’s been on fire this season. He’s racked up eight goals and 13 assists in just 20 games, making him the team’s lead scorer. Remember that game-winning goal against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday? That was him. He also managed a powerplay assist.

But this isn’t Larkin’s first rodeo. Last season, the Michigan native scored a career-high 32 goals and 47 assists. That’s a whopping 79 points in 80 regular season games. And he’s just starting the first year of an eight-year contract extension, worth $69.6M, that he signed in March.

Larkin’s a Red Wings lifer. He was their 15th pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and has been with them ever since. He made the team in his second year post-draft, a rare feat for Red Wings prospects. And when Henrik Zetterberg had to quit due to a degenerative back condition, Larkin stepped up. He’s been the captain since the 2020-21 season.

In other news, Justin Holl might be a no-show for the Rangers game. The defenseman, who has three assists in 16 games this season, is questionable. Holl, a Minnesota native, signed a three-year, $10.2 million contract with the Red Wings after his time in Toronto.

But there’s some good news too. Jake Walman is expected to be back in the lineup for the Rangers game. He’s been out sick for a few games and had an injury before that. The 27-year-old has four goals and four assists in 18 games this season.
