Golden Knights Captain Mark Stone Sidelined with Upper-Body Injury, Week-to-Week Update

Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury, adding to the team’s injury woes as they approach the playoffs without a specific return date set.

Getty Images captures the moment, but the news it heralds isn’t as picture-perfect for the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Vegas Golden Knights are facing a tough break. On Thursday, head coach Bruce Cassidy dropped a bombshell: Captain Mark Stone is benched, grappling with an upper-body injury. Week-to-week, they said.

Stone’s exit from Tuesday night’s clash with the Nashville Predators was abrupt. A hefty hit from Predators’ Yakov Trenin sent him off the ice—Trenin got called for interference, and that was the last we saw of Stone for the night. During Thursday’s press conference, Cassidy painted a grim picture. No Stone for the foreseeable future. “I think (general manager Kelly McCrimmon) summed it up yesterday,” he remarked. “He’s week-to-week.” As for a comeback? The timeline’s as clear as mud. “I don’t have an idea on his return date,” Cassidy admitted. The medical team’s on it, though, promising updates as things progress.

Losing Stone’s a big hit to the Golden Knights, especially with the playoffs on the horizon. “We’re gonna miss him, obviously,” Cassidy conceded. But the game goes on. After steering the team to Stanley Cup glory last season, Stone’s stats this year—16 goals and 37 assists in 56 games—speak volumes. His overall contribution? A whopping 89 goals and 167 assists over 274 games with Vegas.

But Stone’s not the only one on the sidelines. The Golden Knights’ roster is looking pretty thin these days. Jack Eichel’s been out of the game since Jan. 11. William Carrier’s been on IR since Jan. 5, and Pavel Dorofyev hasn’t hit the ice since Jan. 25. Tough times, indeed.
