The Hurricanes are feeling the absence of defenseman Jalen Chatfield as they head into Game 2 against the Panthers.
Coach Rod Brind’Amour says Chatfield’s recovery from an undisclosed injury is looking better, but he’s still not ready for game action.
"All the athletes want to play; if they’re not capable, they’re not capable," Brind’Amour explained. "I think today he is better. I would put him more day to day now, so that’s a good sign."
The 29-year-old Chatfield hasn’t played since May 12, missing Game 5 against the Capitals and the Eastern Conference Final opener.
There’s reason for hope though. Chatfield was back on the ice for Tuesday’s full practice and skated again Wednesday. But he still needs medical clearance before returning to the lineup.
His absence was felt hard in Game 1, where the Canes gave up five goals in their loss to Florida.
Chatfield’s been a key player for Carolina this season. He averaged nearly 19 minutes of ice time during regular season games – the most in his career. In the playoffs, he’s been even more crucial, playing over 20 minutes per game.
His playoff performance has been solid too – one goal and a +6 rating in nine games.
Rookie Scott Morrow stepped in for Game 1 but had a rough night. The 22-year-old finished -3 in just over 12 minutes of ice time. It’s a lot to ask of someone with only 16 NHL games under their belt, even though he showed promise during the regular season with six points in 14 games.
The Hurricanes do have another option in Alexander Nikishin, who made his NHL debut against the Capitals. But he’s just as green as Morrow when it comes to playoff experience.
For now, the Canes will have to hope Chatfield gets cleared soon – they clearly miss his steady presence on the blue line.
