Hurricanes Recall Three Players from AHL

The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled defenseman Dylan Coghlan, forward Max Comtois, and goaltender Antti Raanta from the AHL to serve as depth during their playoff run, following the end of their respective AHL seasons.

Cory Lavalette, reporting for the North State Journal, dropped some news today. The Carolina Hurricanes have made a move. They’ve called up three players from the AHL, now that their seasons are over.

Who’s getting the call? Defenseman Dylan Coghlan, forward Max Comtois, and goaltender Antti Raanta. They’re joining the Hurricanes as Black Aces for the playoff hustle.

Here’s the deal with playoffs – no salary cap or roster limits. So, the Hurricanes are beefing up their depth. Smart, right?

Coghlan’s been almost glued to the AHL this season, playing with the Springfield Thunderbirds. Out of 61 games, he scored 16 goals and added 25 assists. But, he did sneak into one game with the Hurricanes. Though, he didn’t score.

Just two years back, Coghlan was a regular with the Vegas Golden Knights. Then, in July 2022, he found his way to Carolina, part of a deal for Max Pacioretty.

Comtois’s story? Similar. One NHL game this season with a single assist to show for it. Most of his time was with the Chicago Wolves, where he racked up 19 goals and 25 assists in 65 games.

Back in the 2020-21 season, Comtois was on fire with the Anaheim Ducks. He scored 16 goals and had 17 assists in just 55 games. But then, his numbers took a dive. The Ducks decided not to keep him, making him a free agent last summer.

Now, Raanta. Before this year, he was solid for Carolina. In 55 games over two seasons, he boasted a 34-8-7 record. His save percentage? Over .910.

But this year, things haven’t been great for Raanta. His performance has dipped at both the NHL and AHL levels. In 24 games, he’s at a 12-7-2 record with a .872 save percentage. And his AHL stats? Even less impressive.

So, that’s the scoop. The Hurricanes are gearing up for their playoff run, hoping these three can add some depth. Let’s see how this plays out.
