The Pittsburgh Penguins have been on the hunt for depth scoring for a couple of years. In their recent 4-2 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning, they found it from an unexpected source. Their starting goalie, Tristan Jarry.
In the game’s final minute, Jarry did something extraordinary. He became the 14th goalie in NHL history to score a goal. Additionally, he’s the first Penguins goalie to achieve this.
Jarry is known for his strong puck-handling skills. He’s taken shots at empty nets in the past, but this was his first successful attempt at the NHL level.
Interestingly, his goal comes just over a week after his teammate and backup, Alex Nedeljkovic, scored for the Pens’ minor league team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. But Jarry didn’t just score. He also had an impressive game stopping pucks, deflecting 39 out of 41 shots. This helped the Penguins clinch a game where they were likely outplayed for a large portion of the time.
Jarry was a big question mark for the Penguins at the start of this season. His career has been marred by injuries and inconsistency. Goaltending issues have been a thorn in the Penguins’ side in recent years. Yet, despite limited options, management extended his contract this offseason.
So far, Jarry has been excellent this season. And now, he’s got a goal to add to his strong performance in the crease.
