Rangers Forward Misses Regular Season With Leg Injury

Blake Wheeler, a veteran forward for the New York Rangers, has been placed on long-term injured reserve due to a leg injury sustained in a game against the Montreal Canadiens, ending his season early and potentially marking an unfortunate close to his first year with the team since leaving the Winnipeg Jets.

In last night’s clash with the Montreal Canadiens, it seemed Blake Wheeler took a nasty hit to his leg. Now, Chris Johnston from TSN has the scoop. He’s reporting that the New York Rangers are sidelining Wheeler, putting him on long-term injured reserve. Looks like he’s out for the rest of the regular season.

Johnston hinted, though, that Wheeler’s year might be totally done. Whether we see him back on ice hinges on his recovery and just how far the Rangers can push into the playoffs. It’s a tough break for Wheeler and the Rangers alike. This injury might just mark a bitter end to Wheeler’s debut season with the Rangers, after leaving the Winnipeg Jets behind in 2010-11.

Remember, the Jets cut ties with him last summer. Wheeler then landed a one-year deal with the Rangers, pocketing $800K with some nice bonuses for hitting game milestones. Despite a strong offensive record back in Winnipeg during the 2022-23 season, Wheeler’s start in New York was, well, rocky. The team itself kicked off strong, but Wheeler? It took him 11 games to notch his first assist. And another two to score a goal.

As December rolled in, Wheeler’s numbers weren’t looking great. Just two goals and six points in the first 26 games. But then, something clicked. Post December 12, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Wheeler found his groove again. He racked up seven goals and 15 assists in the following 28 games.

With the trade deadline looming, the Rangers have been eyeing the forward market. They’re looking to fill the gap left by center Filip Chytil, out for the rest of the 2023-24 season. With Wheeler now benched too, beefing up their forward line by March 8th is pretty much a given.
