Sam Bennett of Panthers Out for a Week Following Hand Injury in Game 2 Against Lightning

Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett will miss at least a week of play due to a hand injury sustained from a slap shot in Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, impacting the team’s center depth but his replacement, Anton Lundell, contributed significantly to winning the game.

Getty Images just dropped some news, and it’s not the kind we like to hear.

Florida Panthers’ center, Sam Bennett, is benched for a bit. “At least a week,” says head coach Paul Maurice. Ouch. Bennett’s hand took a hit from a slap shot in the Panthers’ Game 2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning. And just like that, he was out.

It happened in the second period. Brandon Montour, Panthers’ defenseman, let one rip. The puck slammed right into Bennett’s left hand. Next thing we know, Bennett’s booking it down the tunnel to the locker room.

Wednesday’s press conference had Maurice spelling it out for us. Bennett’s sitting out for a minimum of one week. That’s three games he’ll miss in the first round, at least.

Losing Bennett? Big ouch for Florida. He’s the guy behind Aleksander Barkov, centering Matthew Tkachuk’s line. Before he had to duck out of Game 2, the guy snagged a goal and an assist. Over the regular season? Twenty goals, twenty-one assists in 69 games. Not too shabby.

But hey, every cloud has its silver lining, right? Anton Lundell stepped up to the plate, filling in for Bennett. Teamed up with Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe, they clinched Game 2 for the Panthers.

And in overtime? Lundell set up Verhaeghe for the game-winner. Boom! Panthers are now leading the series 2-0. Next up, we’re off to Tampa for Games 3 and 4. Let’s see what happens.
